New Law for First-Time Drivers: What Florida Teens Need to Know

Starting July 1, 2025, Florida teens aged 15 to 17 will be required to complete a state-approved driver’s education course before obtaining a learner’s permit. This new law, signed by Governor Ron DeSantis, aims to enhance road safety by ensuring young drivers receive comprehensive training early on.

What’s Changing?

Previously, teens only needed to complete a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course. Under the new law, they must now complete a full driver’s education course approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).

Additional Requirements

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in addition to the driver’s education course, teens must:

They must hold the learner’s permit for at least 12 months or until they turn 18 before qualifying for a driver’s license.

Where to Take the Course

Florida Virtual School offers the driver’s education course online for free and is preparing for increased enrollment. The curriculum emphasizes defensive driving and lifelong safe habits, aiming to reduce fatal teen crashes.

Preparing for the Change

  • Enroll Early: Given the anticipated increase in demand, it’s advisable to enroll in a driver’s education course as soon as possible.
  • Check Local Schools: While not mandatory, some high schools offer driver’s education courses. Availability may vary.
  • Gather Necessary Documents: Ensure you have all required documents, including the Parental Consent Form, before applying for the learner’s permit.
