Safety Specialist – Florida Department of Transportation

My job responsibilities: I am part of the Safety group, which is responsible for safety on the roadways within our District (5 counties). I help coordinate safety studies and projects, as well as take part in educational outreach efforts.

Why I joined the Coalition: As someone from a technical background, I am excited to strive towards teen driver safety by working together with members from various backgrounds for a holistic approach. I am excited to reach out to teens to share with them safe ways to use the roads so that they grow to be safe and responsible road users.

Professional accomplishments: In Spring 2020, I obtained my professional engineering license, but I am actively working to build up soft skills through the Toastmasters club and leadership courses.

Hobbies or areas of interest outside of work: I love visiting theme parks and understanding the science, art, innovation, and business management that go into creating them.

What was your favorite song when you were a teenager? I loved listening to popular music such as Firework by Katy Perry.

What make and model was your first car? 1995 Mercedes C220 because it was a safe car.

What has changed most about driving from the time you were a teenager to now? What I feel has changed the most is the culture of the roadways for both drivers and non-motorists such as pedestrians. They seem to have less respect for the rules of roads.

The one tip I would give any new teen driver would be: Remember that you are responsible for your driving. Be confident, and don’t do anything you are not comfortable with. Build yourself up with time. Be courteous and patient, and don’t panic.
