Learner's License (age 15+): - Minimum age 15. - First three months: daylight driving only. After three months: driving allowed until 10 p.m. - Must always be accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat. - Must be held at least 12 months or until the 18th birthday, whichever comes first. - 50 hours of supervised driving required, including 10 hours at night. Driver License with Restrictions (ages 16-17): - Age 16: driving allowed 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. - Age 17: driving allowed 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. - Exceptions: driving to or from work, or when accompanied by a licensed driver age 21 or older. Full Driver License (age 18+): - No nighttime driving restrictions. - Drivers under 21 with a blood alcohol level of .02 percent or higher have their license immediately suspended for six months; a second offense results in a one-year suspension. - Refusing testing results in a 12-month suspension (18 months on a second offense). Passengers: Florida law requires that the number of passengers not exceed the number of safety belts. Research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows crash risk rises with each additional teen passenger: about 50% higher with one teen passenger, 158% with two, and 207% with three. The greatest lifetime chance of crashing occurs in the first 6 to 12 months after licensure. ## Programs and campaigns Battle of the Belts — https://flteensafedriver.org/battle-of-the-belts A free school campaign that reminds drivers and passengers of the life-saving benefits of wearing a safety belt and asks students to commit to buckling up every trip. Kits include posters, tip cards, announcement scripts, poster and chalk-art contest guides, pre- and post-campaign QR surveys, parking-lot observation tools, peer citation and commendation cards, and a one-page program overview for administrators. Physical kits are mailed at no cost; the same materials are also downloadable as PDFs. Ground Your Parents — https://flteensafedriver.org/ground-your-parents An interactive toolkit that flips the script and lets teens coach their parents on safe driving. Each kit serves up to 100 students and includes posters, parent driving report cards, reminder notes and stickers, and PSA resources. Schools request a kit with school administration approval, then share results by tagging @FLTeenSafeDriver and @StateFarm on Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn. School presentations — https://flteensafedriver.org/school-presentations Nationally recognized speakers share firsthand accounts of crashes caused by distracted and impaired driving. Presentations fit a standard assembly period and are free through FDOT funding. Schools need roughly 400 students and an auditorium or gym, plus administration approval. Teen Driver Challenge — https://flteensafedriver.org/teen-driver-challenge A free defensive driving course from the Florida Sheriffs Association, offered by sheriff's offices in 42 or more Florida counties, combining classroom instruction with hands-on driving exercises.
