Bus Riders: Stay Seen. Stay Safe.

Bus Riders: Stay Seen. Stay Safe.

Riding the school bus is one of the safest ways to get to school — but that doesn’t mean you can zone out completely.

Whether you’re a student riding every day, a parent sending your child to the stop, or a driver passing through a school zone, bus safety starts with being alert, aware, and respectful of the rules.

🛡️ School Buses = Safe, but Not Incident-Proof

According to the National Safety Council over 100 people are killed and thousands more injured in school transportation-related crashes each year. The riskiest time isn’t during the ride — it’s when students are getting on or off the bus.

The area 10 feet around the bus is called the danger zone — that’s where most incidents  happen.

👀 For Students: Be a Smart Bus Rider

Whether you’re in kindergarten or a high school senior, these rules apply:

✅ 1. Be Early. Stay Visible.

  • Arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes early.
  • Stand back at least 3 giant steps (6 feet) from the curb.
  • Avoid wearing dark clothes in early morning or evening light.

✅ 2. Wait for the Signal

  • Only board when the bus is fully stopped and the driver gives the OK.
  • Never chase after a moving bus — let it go.

✅ 3. Cross Smart

  • If you have to cross in front, walk at least 10 feet ahead so the driver can see you.
  • Always make eye contact with the driver before stepping out.
  • Never cross behind the bus.

✅ 4. Stay Seated, Stay Chill

  • Keep your backpack and stuff out of the aisle.
  • Don’t distract the driver.

🚙 For Drivers: Stop Means STOP

It’s not just polite. It’s the law.

Florida law requires all drivers to stop when a school bus is loading or unloading students with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing.

Here’s when to stop:

  • Two-lane road – Stop from both directions
  • Multi-lane paved road – Stop from both directions
  • Divided highway with raised barrier – Only traffic behind the bus stops

Failing to stop = a minimum $165 fine, 4 points on your license, and potentially a suspended license if it happens in a school zone.
